“Our online life is no longer a way to escape from reality, it is our reality. The boundaries between our on - and offline lives are fading and the internet is an extension of our identities.” - Maria Mombers, CEO Portal Park.

With living online a new form of creativity has been introduced: content creation. Through memes, GIF’s, TikTok’s and many more visual manifestations, we express ourselves and our creativity. Not only is the content we see online a way for entertainment but it can also be a strong tool for self-expression, for connection and a contemporary art form.

In the virtual residency ‘Welcome back to Portal Park’ – which is part of the physical exhibition ‘Portal Park’ – we challenge a group of young makers and content creators with a fascination for internet culture to deepen their work in a contemporary art context and redefine the term ‘content creation’.

This residency will take place from August 7 till August 27. The participants will get access to a virtual studio space in Mozilla Hubs. Here they will follow different inspirational sessions and workshops by professionals from the cultural – and digital workfield. There will be focus on topics such as co-creation with AI and virtual worldbuilding. Parallel to these collective moments all participants will work on a project of their own. At the end of the residency there is the opportunity to present the outcome in the virtual exhibition of Portal Park and showcase this during a screen take-over in het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam.

‘Portal Park’ is a physical and virtual exhibition project curated by Maria Mombers, designed as an amusement park, with a program that focuses on exploring and questioning the boundaries between the physical and virtual world in an increasingly digital society.

MaMA is a platform for visual culture in Rotterdam. Young talent develops with us through productions and presentations at the interface of visual arts and popular culture. MAMA realizes presentations, exhibitions, books and magazines, performances, master classes and events, in its own showroom, online and on location, locally and internationally. MAMA’s program is rooted in youth and popular culture and takes place in those areas where broader cultural developments – of a social, societal, technological or economic nature – become visible within contemporary art practice.
