MAMA begins the year with three projects including a solo show by the Colombian artist Oscar Murillo. Murillo uses the exhibition space as a studio and as a place for performances where the participation of others is an important factor. In his performances, Oscar Murillo examines contemporary lifestyle clichés. His work demonstrates a political approach in its comparison of subjects such as class, wealth, economy and power.

For Showroom MAMA Oscar Murillo has created Ossie’s Bingo Boutique, an installation activated through public participation. During the exhibition, his bingo afternoons and evenings give the visitors the chance to win exclusive screen-printed and embroidered T-shirts by Murillo. The T-shirts are from various Rotterdam charity shops and are upgraded to exclusive Comme des Garçons shirts. In total there are 50 unique T-shirts to be won.

Earlier works of Murillo consisted of large graffiti style paintings and concrete casts of fitness equipment. Previous examples of his performances involving large groups of people range from yoga classes, to dance evenings with Colombian music.

Together with Joey Verberkt and Jon Rafman, Oscar Murillo starts off MAMA’s new program. From 2013 MAMA’s program comprises three strands of related content.

In ‘All Together Now’ the focus in on ‘participant activated’ installations and performances in which public participation plays a role, but the artists are the catalyst of the events.

In the theme ‘Eyes Wide Open’ we seek artists who incorporate social, political, and economic reality into their work.

The third strand of content is called ‘Internet Aware ‘ and focuses on online and offline art and culture, where objects and images cannot be understood without knowledge of the systems, symbols, and possibilities created and offered by the Internet.
