MAMA proudly presents the publication This Naked Incident, a visual and textual exploration by Alexander van der Heide & Sander Coers into the place “masculinity” has in the lives of young people today. Alexander and Sander talked with and photographed five peers, all designated male at birth and all with very different experiences of masculinity and equally different gender expressions. Because what is masculinity?

After finishing his bachelor’s in Art & Design, Alexander van der Heide (1998) continued to work as agency curator for VISIONARY Agency in Amsterdam whilst starting up his own practice as creative producer and makeup artist, specialising in fashion photography. He has thus far worked with and for Mirror Mirror Magazine, De Bijenkorf, G-Star, Volkskrant Magazine, and Vogue China, amongst others.

Sander Coers (1997) is a photographer based in Rotterdam whose work revolves around heritage, identity, and memories. The influence of nature is strong, evoked by nostalgic echoes of sultry summer days from his youth in Zeeland. Whilst creating colourful and seductive stills through both documentary and staged photography, he crafts moody, romantic, and dreamlike realities, in which he reflects on the stories of his subjects as well as his own. Sander is the recipient of the 2021 RM Photo Talent Award.

Raoul de Jong (1984) wrote for Vrij Nederland, Het Parool, and NRC Handelsblad. His most recent book Jaguarman (2020) was nominated for the Libris Literature Prize, the European Union Prize for Literature, the Boekenbon Literature Prize, and the Boon.

This Naked Incident is published by Jap Sam Books and made in cooperation with Kenniscentrum Willem de Kooning Academy. Design: Bram Buijs, HOAX Amsterdam. Editing: Florian Cramer, Nathalie Hartjes, Michelle Teran. Final editing: Clementine Edwards.

About IRL

Our lives are dominated by the self-produced realities that we encounter on the internet and social media. This tension between fact and fiction touches upon the core of our leitmotiv IN REAL LIFE. The only way to escape the post-truth is to meet each other in real life. We facilitate these meetings in the form of readings, lectures, masterclasses, workshops, excursions and parties that tangibly express the ideas behind HOME | IN REAL LIFE | NETWORKS.
