Awkward Introductions Radio
MAMA closes the year with you on the air
From December 2 until December 8 MAMA transforms the showroom in the Witte de Withstraat into a live and online radio station with a one-week-long colourful parade of audio-addicted performers, musicians and artists. We are looking back at 2019, but also forward to 2020. For this special occasion MAMA is building a ‘sonic camera obscura’, with a radio studio and a lounge where you are treated to eargasmic wavelengths. And if you feel inspired, feel free to walk into the studio to share your thought spirals with the world. There is plenty of room in the booth and we are flexible; hosts Lila Athanasiadou and Willem de Haan will welcome you with open arms.
All broadcasts can be listened on this page or via the easy to remember URL www.thisismama.nl/radio; or come join us in the showroom-studio during broadcasts. For fun, you can also tune in to 105.3 FM if you are within the Witte de Withstraat.
What’s on the programme? Talkative curators telling stories about their experiences developing exhibitions in MAMA, funky DJ’s, soundscape-performers, a band, someone cooking an egg every day, talents from Team MAMA sharing their passions, artists who don’t know any better; we made sure there is something to love for everybody. This is MAMA’s last project of the year – you are very welcome in the showroom. We promise you radio like you have never heard it before.
For the planners amongst us: the complete programme is published online soon!

Cheap Tuesday!
Today is the day we really had to save on our budget. To make big things possible on other days, today’s production had to be as cheap as possible. Six artists were invited to make a radio item for just €10. How many minutes of radio could you make for that?
We’re amazed by all the plans, concepts and formats! This is what you can do with very little money:
17:00 – 17:20 Egg Radio
After yesterday’s big succes, Egg Radio returns! This time we’ll have a guest appearance by MAMA’s director Nathalie Hartjes. As a student she, just like all of us, sometimes drank just a little bit too much. In this edition of Egg Radio she will share the perfect hangover recipe with all listeners! Come to the showroom (Witte de Withstraat 29-31) to have a taste and rate this egg-dish!
17:20 – 18:00 Auriculotherapy with Lily Lanfermeijer and Angelica Falkeling
Did you know that, in some forms of alternative treatment the ear is seen as a micro system that reflects the entire body? Let me tell you, it is! The ear is seen as a map for organs and emotions interior to its outer shell. Conditions affecting the physical, mental or emotional health of the patient are assumed to be treatable by stimulation of the surface of the ear exclusively. Next to this an ear adorned by piercing types function as landmarks for particular trends. In Auriculotherapy Lily Lanfermeijer and Angelica Falkeling will take you on a fieldtrip threw the mapped-out ear. With contributions of Jacob Dwyer, Maiko Jinushi, Jorge Menna Barreto and Michelle Son.
18:00 – 19:00 SoftRain&ThunderstormSoundswithFirePlace.mp4
It’s a dark Tuesday evening in the beginning of december.
When Maarten Nico (aka Clochard Chic), gets caught broadcasting from behind is computer. Strolling on a digital high street with nothing but time in his pocket.
19:00 – 20:00 Spreekbeurtenavond
It’s a dark Tuesday evening again. The chef and his cooks all prepared a spreekbeurt as they walk trough the streets of Arnhem with a kratje bier in their hands. They’re on their way to the weekly spreekbeurtenavond. If you happen to work in the horeca, Tuesday evening is your Sunday evening. The only difference is that you will have to entertain yourself. Since the cool bar, the bar you work in, is closed that day. Matthieu Reijnoudt, Derk Derksen, Rens Pörtzgen and Thomas Burger entertain themselves and each other with interesting and odd spreekbeurten every Tuesday. This Tuesday they are invited to share this weekly gathering on live radio for first time. I hope the fee will cover their kratje bier.
20:00 – 20:15 Alex Phillips
This talent from Rotterdam is famous for Pure Propoganda and the You and I record. And we’re lucky, you and me! Because Alexandra is bringing her You and I record to Awkward Introductions Radio. It sounds exactly like it’s title, come by and have a listen!
20:15 – 20:30 Opening night at the Klevan Gallery
In this autobiographical dream-telling you are invited (or forced) to experience an opening night like many others at the Klevan Gallery. A night where each visitor is too busy with themselves to find their glasses; to look at the art; to see the underlying and everlasting social patterns; and to detect what a mere janitor has to do with it all. With sisters Sarah Klevan and Anna Klevan.
20:30 – 21:15 C.V. De Gierboys
Due to tradition this act’s description is in Dutch: Over je Gier met C.V. De Gierboys: De Mega Clip Release Special! Awkward Radio Introductions is a throwback to the four exhibitions developed in MAMA in 2019. We reflect on the shows curated by Dieuwke Boersma, Maria Lamslag, Lila Athanasiadou and Willem de Haan and how they experienced their involvement with MAMA. We also invited a bunch of friends who are treating us to some wonderful radio items inspired by the themes of the four exhibitions; in this way we say goodbye to 2019 in style. Finally, during A.I.R. we also look into the future with the programme makers who will be part of MAMA in 2020.
