What do we need from each other to create environments and spaces that allow us to flourish, to grow, to heal? How do we imagine radical care and make current infrastructures of care last? How can we center tenderness and healing, while also making space for critical dialogues?

On Collective Care & Togetherness envisions lasting infrastructures of care and wants to explore the ways in which we can create and sustain communities of care, joy, and connection. Covid-19 and the recent global protests against anti-Black racism laid bare intertwined structures of inequality. The social and political landscape and the ongoing failures of capitalism prompted the urgency to create, organize, and intervene outside governmental infrastructures to create lasting forms of solidarity. Awareness of on-and offline support networks and the importance of (pre-existing and new) community initiatives has enlarged. In order to imagine a more just world new strategies and ways of being together need to be envisioned, where marginalized voices should be at the forefront.

On Collective Care & Togetherness brings together artistic practices that work with the notion of (collective) care and togetherness. The works address pain and systemic oppression – such as alienation, racism, and police violence –  but also togetherness, community, joy, and care. The artists are based in, investigate, or are in dialogue with social and embodied learning around the politics of care, and are in a variety of ways committed to practices that critically interrogate current political landscapes and bring forward different narratives.

The exhibition plays with the contrast between on the one hand personal and local narratives, and on the other hand global narratives. With a selection of paintings, photography, and video- and audio installations the exhibition brings together different stories and experiences around the topic of care.

On Collective Care & Togetherness wants to create a safe and welcoming environment where visitors can gather (following the Covid-19 regulations) to experience the artworks and programme. The exhibition invites people to start collective conversations and exchange knowledge on how to create lasting infrastructures and practices of care. The exhibition comes together with a publication that is a collaboration between Publishing House Chaos, MAMA and Leana Boven. The publication will be launched in November.
