#MoreFunAwaits
A Video Installation by Álvaro Talavera
This work is made by Team MAMA member Álvaro Talavera, inspired by the themes of Departures. Every exhibition hosted by MAMA is accompanied by a series of In Real Life events. One of these events is organized by the talents of Team MAMA.
On October 22, as part of our current exhibition Departures and just for one day, we’ll be showing #MoreFunAwaits, a video installation by team member Álvaro Talavera exploring the impact and the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in a developing country such as the Philippines.
In contrast to a recently launched promotional video from the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) highlighting “the sun and beach tourist destinations that the country is well-known for,” and inspired by Sofía Gallisá Muriente’s B-Roll, #MoreFunAwaits features a selection of virtual walking tours recorded and uploaded to YouTube by internet content creator Krypto Trekker in the middle of what has been called “enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).”
The installation will be on view at MAMA from 2 to 9 p.m. and the artist will join us at 5 p.m. to talk about his work and answer your questions. Drop by and walk the streets of Manila with us! Drinks will be served during the presentation, and there will be Filipino snacks!
Álvaro Talavera graduated in fine arts from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid and earned a Master’s Degree in Research and Creativity in Art from the Universidad del País Vasco. In recent years he has received various grants for specialized training in cultural management, allowing him to broaden his experience in cities such as Manila, Lisbon, and Limerick. Alongside his academic and professional activity, he has taken part in numerous exhibitions, artist residencies, workshops, and symposia at several institutions, including the Centro Cultural Montehermoso and the Fundación Bilbao Arte. He has been editor-in-chief of the Spanish-Philippine cultural magazine Perro Berde since 2017.
About IRL
Our lives are dominated by the self-produced realities that we encounter on the internet and social media. This tension between fact and fiction touches upon the core of our leitmotiv IN REAL LIFE. The only way to escape the post-truth is to meet each other in real life. We facilitate these meetings in the form of readings, lectures, masterclasses, workshops, excursions and parties that tangibly express the ideas behind HOME | IN REAL LIFE | NETWORKS.
