Land Art For A New Generation
Just as a Moebius strip has no front or back, real life events simultaneously occur in actuality and on the Internet.
Land Art For A New Generation is a project consisting of a group exhibition and four artist residencies. The starting point for the project is the fact that the analog and digital are now so closely interwoven, and reflects upon the connections between the smallest (non-tangible digital code) and the largest (the experience of nature and natural phenomena).
Just as a Moebius strip has no front or back, real life events simultaneously occur in actuality and on the Internet. This seemingly random contrast was brought into sharp focus by the tsunami that hit Japan on March 28, 2011, especially the impression made by the harrowing images and extraordinary scenes that reached the West via Youtube and Vimeo.
Within land art and Internet art, works are created and presented outside of the museum and gallery circuit. Questions are raised about the depletion of natural resources and the human scale. These observations are central to this multidisciplinary project, in which MAMA seeks out the most contemporary variants of land art. During the show documented projects and objects shall be brought into the exhibition space.
Land Art For A New Generation takes place on various platforms: in the MAMA showroom, in public space and on the web. The exhibition centers on a generation of artists dealing with themes such as (digital) decay and the continuous processing of vast amounts of information. They all share an interest in the creation of new databases at the interface of the physical object and immaterial digital culture.
Online residency
In partnership with Kunstverein Hamburg, MAMA introduces the innovative idea of the online residency. The online residency is intended for and focuses on a new generation of artists who use the Internet not only as a material, but also as the primary presentation platform for work and performances. MAMA and Kunstverein Hamburg are creating a temporary stage, which shall run on a 24/7 basis from 17 June at www.onlineresidency.com. Visitors to the online platform get a behind the scenes look at the work of the net artist. The first online resident presented by MAMA and Kunstverein Hamburg is the German artist Aram Bartholl.
Residencies
During Land Art for A New Generation, MAMA also offers three actual artist residencies on the Brienenoord Island. In June the US Kari Altmann and the Rotterdam artist Dennis de Bel shall be working there. In July, Berlin based French artst, Juliette Bonneviot will be in residence. Documentation and physical results of the residencies shall be uploaded to the Showroom during the exhibition.
About HOME
HOME is the leitmotiv by which we encourage conversation about conceptions regarding belonging, representation and identification. HOME is a fundament, the place you return to and anchorpoint for the journey onward. HOME (offline as well as online) is the start of feeling connect to others. Under the name HOME we also present exhibitions in the showroom of MAMA. In collaboration with young makers we express interpretations about HOME | IN REAL LIFE | NETWORKS.
