MaMA 

MAMA proudly presents The Standees, a new project by the Rotterdam artist Remty Elenga. The exhibition’s title comes from the freestanding cardboard advertisements used to promote movies in cinemas. While working part-time at Cinerama movie theatre in Rotterdam, Remty Elenga collected a large number of these ‘standees’. For the past year, she has worked on the realization of a new film and installation in which the ‘standees’ take the starring roles.

The Standees is an installation inspired by the film industry and it’s celebrity actors. In a staged world, constructed characters are found roaming through a hotel. In The Standees, cardboard versions of famous actors take on a new role, in a new story. What the characters do in the movie or what brings them together is unknown. The hotel only seems to accommodate other Standees. Lost from the outside world they appear trapped in their own loneliness and boredom.

Last year, MAMA’s curator, Gerben Willers, worked closely with Remty Elenga. MAMA, as an art institution, is home to a large group of young people and offers a place for the newest talent. Under the guidance of MAMA’s staff, young artists and art professionals work on the production of new exhibitions, publications and artworks.
