MaMA is looking for a temporary Head of Relational Practices & Research – freelance

Do you enjoy creating spaces for learning, participation, dialogue and supporting others to grow within them? Are you at your best when guiding a team, connecting ideas, and shaping collaborative processes? If so, you might be MaMA’s temporary Head of Relational Practices & Research.

We are looking for a temporary freelance colleague to cover a maternity leave. The position starts in the week of November 17th 2025 and runs until April 2026, with the possibility of extension. Working hours are 8 hours per week in November, increasing to 20 hours per week from December onwards.
About the role
As temporary Head of Relational Practices & Research, you will take on part of the responsibilities of MaMA’s current head. In this role, you:
- Act as a sparring partner for MaMA’s director and colleagues on topics related to (un)learning, participation, and accessibility.
- Guide the Learning & Engagement department, which focuses on talent development, educational programs, and public participation in exhibitions and MaMA-related activities.
In practice, this means you will:
- Participate in daily management and staff meetings on Tuesdays.
- Develop public participation strategies and tools for upcoming exhibitions, in dialogue with colleagues.
- Oversee the implementation of new (educational) programs.
- Occasionally support the writing of funding applications.
- Lead the preparation of future projects, based on existing plans.
Who we’re looking for
You are someone who:
- Is comfortable expressing themselves in both English and Dutch.
- Is located in or around Rotterdam and familiar with its cultural and educational landscape.
- Has experience in mentoring and coaching emerging makers.
- Has demonstrable experience in leading projects, including budget management.
- Has a background in education.
- Has an affinity with and/or interest in disability justice and accessibility.
- Has a hands-on, proactive attitude and is comfortable stepping in where needed.
What MaMA offers:
- A freelance rate following the ‘Guideline for Function and Salary Structures for Presentation Institutions in the Visual Arts’, at €40,- per hour.
- In addition to regular workdays on Tuesday and Thursday, four flexible hours for supervising MaMA’s public events, to be scheduled in consultation.
