Positioning System – whereareyou, Iamhere, hereweare
The number of possibilities for physically locating people and places is continually increasing as a result of technical systems like the GPS. We become disorientated as a result of the decline of traditional geographical borders and clearly outlined identities.
Positioning System – whereareyou, Iamhere, hereweare – is an exhibition of recently graduated artists from Belgium and the Netherlands. In order to localize and position themselves in relation to their historical, social and cultural environment, they make use of an individual positioning system. They encounter, register and infiltrate their surroundings via diverse systematic approaches. This is comparable to GPS; the highly popular system that enables users to both determine their own position and to find their way in an immense landscape of possible routes.
The number of possibilities for physically locating people and places is continually increasing as a result of technical systems like the GPS. At the same time, paradoxically, it’s getting harder to psychologically define fixed locations. We become disorientated as a result of the decline of traditional geographical borders and clearly outlined identities.
Positioning Systems –Whereareyou, Iamhere, hereweare’ is the outcome of the educational programme Mr. Miyagi Curating Tomorrow 2006. After the success of the pilot edition Mr. Miyagi 2005, also this year Showroom MAMA offered a select group of young curators the opportunity to develop a project for Showroom MAMA, under the guidance of five international curators and MAMA staff. The Mr. Miyagi Curating Tomorrow course is generously sponsored by the VSB fund.
Curated by Mr. Miyagi Curating Tomorrow 2006: Katayoun Arian, Elke van Eeden, Petra Heck, Camiel van Lenteren, Magali Meijers and Femke Vos with the contribution of Mounira Al Solh, Willem Besselink, Pierre Derks, Heidi Linck, Katharina D. Martin, Rosalie Monod de Froideville, Chris Mudde and Philippe van Wolputte.
About HOME
HOME is the leitmotiv by which we encourage conversation about conceptions regarding belonging, representation and identification. HOME is a fundament, the place you return to and anchorpoint for the journey onward. HOME (offline as well as online) is the start of feeling connect to others. Under the name HOME we also present exhibitions in the showroom of MAMA. In collaboration with young makers we express interpretations about HOME | IN REAL LIFE | NETWORKS.
