MaMA

MaMA is a platform for contemporary art and popular culture, with a strong focus on emerging talent. We organize exhibitions, performances, events, and publications, and act as a springboard for the newest generation of makers.

Since 1997, MaMA has held a unique position within Rotterdam’s cultural ecosystem and beyond, providing a platform for subcultures and countercultures. Our mission is to be a creative platform that bridges the gap between young makers and the broader cultural field. We connect generations, disciplines, and worlds, both online and offline.

MaMA currently receives structural funding from the Municipality of Rotterdam and the Mondriaan Fund. MaMA works according to the principles of the Governance Code Culture, the Fair Practice Code, and the Diversity & Inclusion Code.

MaMA’s board currently consists of six members. We are looking for a treasurer to strengthen the board. This is an unpaid position requiring an average commitment of approximately six hours per month.

The board

The board has delegated the implementation of MaMA’s multi-year plans to the director, while remaining closely involved with the organization. The board primarily has an advisory role and acts as the director’s employer. In addition to the chair and secretary, the board consists of four general members with diverse professional backgrounds.

The board meets four to six times a year. In addition, board members contribute to the organization based on their individual areas of expertise.

As a MaMA board member, you directly contribute to the development of tomorrow’s talent and to a cultural sector in which new voices are given space. You will be closely connected to a new generation of makers, gain a unique insight into their ideas and practices, and are welcome at MaMA’s openings, presentations, and other activities. At the same time, you will broaden your own perspective and network by working with people from different disciplines and backgrounds. You bring your expertise and gain new perspectives and inspiration in return. The coming period is particularly special: MaMA celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2027, a milestone we will celebrate together with makers, audiences, and partners.

As a MaMA board member, you have:

• an affinity with MaMA’s vision and mission;
• independent judgment and the ability to ask critical questions;
• a strong sense of social engagement and the ability to consider the organization from different perspectives;
• a relevant network for MaMA, preferably also in Rotterdam, and a willingness to actively draw on that network;
• experience with a comparable governance structure, preferably within the cultural sector;
• the willingness to dedicate sufficient time to board meetings and to provide advice based on your area of expertise.

Profile and role of the treasurer

We are looking for a treasurer with financial expertise who can contribute to discussions with the board and director in a thoughtful, critical, and constructive way. Experience with finance and risk management within a small to medium-sized organization is important. Experience in the cultural sector is a plus.

As treasurer, you oversee MaMA’s financial position and continuity from your role on the board. You keep an eye on financial developments, identify potential risks, and contribute to discussions about different scenarios and the financial implications of decisions.

With your expertise, you contribute to a healthy organization and, in turn, to creating the space for young makers to experiment and develop their practice.

In practice, this means that you:

• oversee the foundation’s financial position and continuity;
• review and provide input on budgets, cash flow forecasts, annual accounts, and financial reports;
• have a brief monthly check-in with the director about the cash flow forecast;
• conduct a quarterly financial spot check, for example on income, expenditure, or financial commitments;
• advise the board on financial risks, scenarios, and decisions;
• provide a critical and constructive perspective on grant applications and reporting when financial input is required.
