MaMA is hiring two visitor and exhibitions assistants
Two positions, 16 hours per week, Rotterdam
Start date: 1 January 2027
About MaMA
MaMA is a platform for visual culture in Rotterdam. We bring forward stories that highlight what is happening in society through exhibitions, performances, publications and other forms of visual culture. We work with a new generation of artists and program makers, including people from outside the art world. From their own perspectives, they shape our program and bring together artists, ideas and stories. This results in projects that give new voices a platform and make space for different experiences.
Our showroom is located in the heart of Rotterdam, on Witte de Withstraat.
The role
As a Visitor and Exhibitions Assistant, you are one of the familiar faces in our showroom. We are hiring two new colleagues for the role, each working 16 hours per week. You will work two days a week, one of which will be a weekend day.
During exhibitions, you welcome visitors, tell them about the program and make sure the space is welcoming, accessible and well looked after. You know the exhibition and program well and can talk about them in an accessible way. You enjoy talking to visitors about what they see, what they think and the questions they have. Some visitors may want to have a longer conversation, while others prefer to explore independently. You can sense what is needed and adapt accordingly.
MaMA is not open all year round. Between exhibitions, we transform the showroom for the next program. During these periods, your work shifts: you help the team take down the previous exhibition and prepare and install the next one. This means you are also involved in what happens behind the scenes in our showroom. You will also help with the practical side of openings, events and other public programs, working with the team to create a welcoming and enjoyable space.
What will you do?
- Welcome visitors, help them find their way around and talk with them about the exhibition, artists and MaMA’s program
- Keep an eye on the exhibition space and make sure the showroom remains tidy, safe, and accessible
- Help with openings, events and other public programs
- Support tours, workshops, group visits and venue hires, for example by welcoming visitors and groups, preparing spaces and scanning tickets
- Contribute to audience research by collecting visitors’ experiences, questions and feedback and sharing these with the team
- Help install and take down exhibitions and assist with other practical and facilities-related tasks, such as keeping track of supplies
Who are you?
We are looking for someone who enjoys meeting different people and also likes practical, hands-on work. You do not need to have studied within an artistic context or know everything about contemporary art. What matters more to us is that you are curious and keen to get to know our program well.
You are open and welcoming, can work independently and take responsibility. You are reliable, proactive and happy to roll up your sleeves. You can communicate well with our visitors, in Dutch and/or English. You enjoy working in a small and committed team.
Experience in visitor services, hospitality, events, education or a cultural organization is welcome, but not required. Experience installing and taking down exhibitions or events is a plus. You do not need to have technical experience, but you should be interested in learning new practical and technical skills.
What do we offer?
This is a 16-hour-per-week position. We offer an initial one-year contract starting on 1 January 2027, which can be extended for a maximum of two additional one-year periods.
The salary is €1,072 gross per month for 16 hours per week, based on a full-time salary of €2,547 gross for 38 hours per week, in accordance with the Richtlijn functie- en loongebouw instellingen voor beeldende kunst (Faciliterend category). In addition, you will receive 8% holiday allowance and build up a pension. Travel expenses are not reimbursed. You will have opportunities to develop your skills further, for example through training or courses.
MaMA works according to the principles of the Governance Code Culture, Fair Practice Code and Diversity & Inclusion Code.
