How do you rest when there are eyes on you?
In the middle of the busy and crowded Witte de Withstraat, artist Izzy Wu Ramos @izzywuramos will spend the night in our showroom on October 31.
Izzy lives with narcolepsy. During her studies, she regularly fell asleep on trams, in cafeterias, and in libraries.
In ZOO/WANDERLAND?, she sleeps in plain sight of the city. Through the showroom windows and via an online stream, visitors and randomly passing people can watch her fall asleep and wake up again, while being observed. With this performance, she explores how difficult it can be to find rest in public spaces and what it means when you can’t choose for yourself where and when you sleep.
In this way, Izzy symbolically closes our Resting Space and brings MaMA’s month of exploration into sensory processing to a close with the question: for who is there space to find rest?
