MaMA

MaMA is a leading platform for contemporary art and popular culture, with a strong focus on emerging talent. We organize exhibitions, performances, events, and publications, and act as a springboard for the newest generation of makers.

Since 1997, MaMA has held a unique position within the cultural ecosystem of Rotterdam and beyond, as a place where subcultures and countercultures are given a platform. Our mission is to be a creative platform that bridges the gap between emerging makers and the wider cultural field. We connect generations, disciplines, and worlds, both online and offline.

MaMA currently receives structural funding from the Municipality of Rotterdam and the Mondriaan Fund. MaMA works in accordance with the principles of the Governance Code for Culture, the Fair Practice Code, and the Diversity & Inclusion Code.

MaMA’s board currently consists of six members. We are looking for a treasurer to strengthen the board. This is an unpaid position requiring an average commitment of approximately 6 hours per month.

The board

The board has delegated the implementation of MaMA’s multi-year plans to the director but remains closely involved in the organization. The board primarily has an advisory role and acts as the director’s employer. In addition to the chair and secretary, the board has four general members with a diverse range of backgrounds and expertise.

The board meets 4 to 6 times a year. In addition, board members are actively involved with the organization based on their individual areas of expertise.

As a MaMA board member, you contribute directly to the development of tomorrow’s talent and to a cultural sector in which new voices are given space. You will be closely connected to a new generation of makers, gain a unique insight into their ideas and working practices, and are welcome at MaMA’s openings, presentations, and other activities. At the same time, you will broaden your own perspective and network by working with people from different disciplines and worlds. You bring your expertise and gain new perspectives and inspiration in return. The coming period is particularly special: in 2027, MaMA will celebrate its 30th anniversary, a milestone we will celebrate together with makers, audiences, and partners.

As a MaMA board member, you have:

• an affinity with MaMA’s vision and mission;
• independent judgment and the ability to ask critical questions;
• a strong sense of social engagement and the ability to consider the organization from different perspectives;
• a relevant network for MaMA, preferably including connections in Rotterdam, and a willingness to make use of it;
• experience with a comparable governance structure, preferably within the cultural sector;
• the willingness to dedicate sufficient time to meetings and to provide advice based on your expertise.

Profile and role of the treasurer

We are looking for a treasurer with strong financial expertise who can contribute to discussions with the board and director in a constructive, critical, and collaborative way. Experience with planning and control, risk management, and working within a small to medium-sized organization with a mix of public and private funding is important. Experience in the cultural sector is an advantage. Fundraising expertise is already represented within the board.

With your financial expertise, you will not only contribute to a financially healthy organization, but also help create the conditions in which emerging makers can experiment, grow, and find their place within the cultural field.

As treasurer, you oversee MaMA’s financial position and continuity on behalf of the board. You keep track of the organization’s financial developments, ask the right questions, and identify financial risks and areas that require attention when necessary. You contribute to discussions about different scenarios and the financial implications of decisions.

Specifically, this means that you:

• oversee the foundation’s financial position and continuity;
• review and provide input on budgets, liquidity forecasts, annual accounts, and financial reports;
• have a brief monthly check-in with the director about the liquidity forecast;
• carry out a quarterly financial spot check, for example on income, expenditure, or financial commitments;
• advise the board on financial risks, scenarios, and decisions;
• critically and constructively review grant applications and reporting when financial substantiation is required;
• maintain an overview in crisis situations and help determine which financial and governance steps are needed.
